TMJ

Tempromandibular Joint Dysfunction occurs as a result of problems with the: jaw, jaw joint and surrounding facial muscles that control chewing and the movement of the jaw. It can range from a mild ache to chronic and debilitating pain.

At PhysioCare & Rehab, we provide a variety of treatments for Tempormandibular Joint Dysfunctions. Our Team of highly trained health professionals will perform a detailed assessment and focus on the rapid reduction of symptoms by utilizing manual therapy techniques, modalities and home exercises. We work in conjunction with dentists, orthodontists and ear, nose and throat specialists to normalize functional opening and masticatory control.

What Causes TMJ?
The cause of TMJ is not clear, but dentists believe that symptoms arise from problems with the muscles of the jaw or with the parts of the joint itself.

Injury to the jaw, temporomandibular joint, or muscles of the head and neck — such as from a heavy blow or whiplash — can cause TMJ. Other possible causes include

  • Trauma: direct blow to the joint, car accident, fall
  • Grinding/ clenching of the teeth causing increased stress on the jaw muscles and the joint
  • Misalignment of bite due to missing teeth or teeth not biting together in synchrony
  • Stress
  • Poor posture
  • Tight muscles
  • Arthritic changes to the joint
